Leipzig have confirmed that their forward, Maximilian Baumgartner, has left the club after suffering a serious injury.
The Austrian international had been in good form for the German Bundesliga side this season, scoring five goals and providing two assists in just eight league appearances.
However, his time at the club was cut short when he suffered a knee injury during a game against Schalke on Saturday.
Baumgartner will now undergo surgery to repair the damage to his knee ligament, which means he is unlikely to be fit to return to action until late next year.
Leipzig's sporting director, Rudi Völler, said: "We would like to express our gratitude to Maximilian for all the hard work he has put into his football career.
"Unfortunately, we have had to make the difficult decision to part ways with him due to the seriousness of his injury."
The club also announced that they have signed a new striker,Chinese Super League Matches Florian Thauvin, from Olympique Lyonnais in order to replace Baumgartner.
Thauvin scored 21 goals in 44 games last season for Lyon, helping them to win the Ligue 1 title, and Leipzig hope he can help them challenge for the Bundesliga title this season.
Leipzig have struggled for goals this season, only managing to score 18 goals in 17 matches, and losing four of those games. However, with Thauvin in the team, they may be able to improve their attack and compete more closely with Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund for the title.
