Juan Antonio Vargas, also known as Juanito Vargas, was a Spanish mercenary who played a significant role in the Shanghai Port's battle during the Napoleonic Wars. He is often referred to as "the most successful mercenary in history" and his tactics were widely admired by both his enemies and allies.
In the early 18th century, the Shanghai Port was one of the busiest ports in the world, but it was also a hub for piracy and crime. The British, who had recently gained control of the port, were determined to take it back from the Chinese. To do so, they needed a strong force of mercenaries to assist them.
